Its that time of year again - Guilfest is just around the corner, or the weekend of July 15th-17th to be precise. This year we're playing the Kane FM - Funky End dance tent on the sunday alongside DJ Fresh, DC Breaks, Jehst, Diversion Tactics and Jazzy M, aswell as lots of other Kane FM DJs and local talent.

Direct Drive 'Verbal Assault' / 'Play You A Song' 12" (1999)

This was a Drum & Bass 12" we released way back in 1999, pressing 500 white labels with our own money. Its very much in the Urban Takeover/Fresh Kutt style of things as thats what we were listening to alot at the time. We made the track in 98 but by the time we managed to get it on the shelves the D&B landscape had shifted somewhat and - as one of the reviews below points out - that style of Hip Hop influenced jump-up wasn't really flavour of the month. Still we shifted enough copies to break even (the distributor lost some of our boxes in their stockroom which hindered sales slightly!) and managed to get some support from Darren Jay and Aphrodite amongst others. All in all, a pretty successful project and we like to think 'Verbal Assault' still sounds good today!

Seeing as the sun's out here in the UK, we have take it upon ourselves to drop a mix each. Both were mixed using vinyl and are very much on a summery vibe: Mystery draws for the piano-y/vocal House selection circa 1992 and I've gone for some classic UK Garage from 97-98. Enjoy!
